I’ve seen 8mm and Super 8 prints from Castle of the same length marked $2 to about $2.60. This is incredibly cheap compared to the more expensive Castle films. I’ve found that the price tag often found on them has price of 79¢ to $1.15. They were sold in dime stores and other discount outlets. These little films, most of the time only 50 ft long, were the mid 60s through early 70s equivalent to the PD VHS and DVDs that would follow many years later. On the other hand, Carnvival films, located just outside of New York in Lodi, New Jersey, offered 8mm prints of cartoons, westerns and Comedies from any source they found. The prints they made are generally pretty good, often pulled from original negatives to make their print down masters. These ‘legitimate’ releases all featured films that were licensed by Castle from a handful of studios and owners of cartoon properties. They released lots of golden age cartoons from both major studios and many one shots as well. The two ‘bigger’ companies in the golden age of home movie prints were Castle films and Official films. For this of you that collect films, this is probably well worn information- but if not, here’s the first segment of a brief guide to who made what in terms of the home movie versions of the many golden age cartoons. The note derives from the semifusa in mensural notation. In Unicode, U+266C (♬) is a pair of beamed semiquavers. Similar rules apply to smaller divisions such as thirty-second notes (demisemiquavers) and sixty-fourth notes (hemidemisemiquavers). Note the similarities in notating sixteenth notes and eighth notes. When multiple sixteenth notes or eighth notes (or thirty-second notes, etc.) are next to each other, the flags may be connected with a beam, like the notes in Figure 2. On stems facing up, the flags start at the top and curve down for downward facing stems, the flags start at the bottom of the stem and curve up. Flags are always on the right side of the stem, and curve to the right. When they are on the middle line (in instrumental music) or above it, they are drawn with stems on the left of the note head, facing down. As with all notes with stems, sixteenth notes are drawn with stems to the right of the notehead, facing up, when they are below the middle line of the musical staff (or on the middle line, in vocal music). A corresponding symbol is the sixteenth rest (or semiquaver rest), which denotes a silence for the same duration. A single sixteenth note is always stemmed with flags, while two or more are usually beamed in groups. Sixteenth notes are notated with an oval, filled-in note head and a straight note stem with two flags (see Figure 1). It is the equivalent of the semifusa in mensural notation, first found in 15th-century notation. Pero es muy importante que la conozcas y sepas cual es su valor. In music, a 1/16, sixteenth note ( American) or semiquaver ( British) is a note played for half the duration of an eighth note (quaver), hence the names. While we associate the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons with swords, they actually relied heavily on spears as their everyday weapons.īy the 14th century, the humble spear fell out of favor with most armies in Europe. Instead, spears served as thrusting weapons. European soldiers rarely used spears as projectile weapons. Most medieval spears measured 6-8 feet in length and were used by both cavalry and infantry soldiers. Spears were the main weapons of common soldiers in the early Middle Ages due to their simple and cheap design. Heads could be forged in triangular or leaf shapes. Medieval spears featured wooden shafts and sharpened iron heads. Spears are some of the oldest weapons in human history and were important in the Middle Ages. Brooklyn Museum, CC BY 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons The basic design of the spear inspired other pole arms such as the lance. 4) Spear Medieval spears were thrusting weapons. Later versions of the stave featured large spears for thrusting as well as blunt ends, hooks, and other features. Most were effective for cutting and thrusting maneuvers.Īs plate armor advanced, pole arms also became more sophisticated. Commonly called staves in the Middle Ages, pole arms varied widely in their design. Pole arms are defined as long shafts with fighting weapons on their ends. It could also be used to catch the arms and legs of enemies and the reins and legs of horses. The war hammer’s long spike could cause damage even without puncturing this new type of steel. New forging technologies allowed smiths to create surface hardened steel that withstood the blows of weapons. War hammers reached their peak popularity in the 14th and 15th centuries as a response to armor advancement. Some war hammers could be as long as a halberd, but many were closer in size to a mace. Medieval war hammers closely resembled the everyday tool, but featured a long handle and spike for stabbing. Metropolitan Museum of Art, CC0, via Wikimedia Commons Variations of the weapon were crafted for professional soldiers, peasant militias, and ceremonial uses.ģ) War Hammer Medieval war hammers were made for damaging plate armor. Both cavalry and foot soldiers carried morning stars. This weapon became widespread in Europe by the 14th century. Morning stars usually had wooden handles and could measure up to 6 feet in length. It resembled a spiked club and featured a long spike at its end with many smaller spikes radiating from a central ball. The morning star is one of the most menacing-looking medieval weapons. Unknown authorUnknown author, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons These weapons are characterized by their many points. Both foot and cavalry soldiers wielded maces.Ģ) Morning Star A knight holding a morning star. They were widely used in peasant rebellions and major conflicts. Maces were common due to their simple design. Regardless of the shape, maces could damage plate armor and cause major injuries without puncturing the armor. The sizes and shapes of maces varied widely, as shown in the illustration above. While most mace heads were crafted from iron, other materials like copper, bronze, and stone were also used. Maces featured radial symmetry to allow for deadly blows from any angle. Developed from the club, a medieval mace was made up of a handle with a heavy head. The mace is one of the simplest weapons on the list. Charles Henry Ashdown, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons 1) Mace Illustrations showing the variation in maces throughout the Middle Ages. The following are blunt and close range weapons that would have done serious damage to a soldier’s body, armor, and horse. Swords were highly effective in close combat, but many other options existed for medieval soldiers. They are categorized according to their construction and use on the battlefield. The following list does not contain swords, knives, and daggers, but instead focuses on other forged medieval weapons. While swords proved highly effective in close combat, they could not be used in other types of fighting. Close combat weapons, siege weapons, and ranged weapons developed to meet the needs of soldiers in different fighting scenarios. Weapon usage also varied depending on the type of warfare required. As armor technology improved, the types of weapons altered to be more effective in battle. The advancement of plate armor is an important factor to consider when studying forged weapons of the medieval period. However, dozens of other weapons were used by soldiers during the Middle Ages for various purposes. Books, movies, video games, and historical reenactments have convinced most of us that the sword was the most common and important weapon of this time period. The medieval sword is arguably the most famous weapon in history. Forged Weapons of the Middle Ages That Aren’t Swords Microsoft 365 Personal is the best value for one year.If you only need Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on one device: Now that we've looked at the cost across one, five, and 10 years, does Office 2019 or Microsoft 365 provide a better value? That depends on your needs. Otherwise, buying one of the Office packages is much more cost-effective. However, this only makes sense if you're sure you need just one app. You can purchase standalone versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, or Publisher for $140 each. We also didn't cover buying Office apps individually. Prices may change, and Microsoft could add or remove benefits to Microsoft 365 in the meantime. There's no guarantee that Microsoft will offer another standalone version of Office to replace Office 2019. Of course, we've made some assumptions in these calculations. This brings us to $500 for Office alone, or $890 with Skype and OneDrive.įinally, Office 2019 Pro without any extras would cost you the initial $440, plus an upgrade for the same price in 2025. The 10-year costs are the same for OneDrive and Skype. The initial cost of $250 still stands, plus another $250 to upgrade at the end of support. Next, consider Office 2019 Home & Business. With OneDrive and Skype, the total cost over 10 years is $690. If you don't purchase any extras, your initial purchase and upgrade totals $300. In addition, the Skype credit comes to about $150 for 120 hours. Subscribing to the 100GB OneDrive plan costs $240 for 10 years. In addition to the initial $150 purchase for Office 2019 Home & Student, you upgraded in 2025 for another $150. And Microsoft 365 Family equals $1,000 over the decade. Microsoft's 365 Personal subscription comes to $700 total for 10 years. Say you stick with your chosen Office setup for an entire decade. 1/6/2024 0 Comments Free PacifistBut by failing to distance themselves from fascism, anti-war movements during World War II badly hurt their own cause. The 1930s were a time when “antiwar sentiment attained unprecedented popular scope,” according to the historian Hans Schmidt. Hitler hated Remarque in part because his book was a massive worldwide hit on its release in 1929. People who opposed the war ended up soaked in Nazi ideology and Nazi talking points, even if they didn’t start there.Īfter World War I, pacifism gained many adherents. The anti-war movement in the United States before World War II was thoroughly infiltrated with fascist sympathizers and fascist anti-Semitic propaganda. Lindbergh was not exactly a committed Nazi following Pearl Harbor, he tried to enlist in the U.S. Lindbergh claimed that Jewish people were pushing the United States into war, arguing: “Their greatest danger to this country lies in their large ownership and influence in our motion pictures, our press, our radio and our government.” The stereotype of Jewish people as conspiratorial warmongering profiteers still has currency today in 2006, the actor Mel Gibson infamously claimed that “Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.” Most infamously, the hero aviator Charles Lindbergh, the de facto leader of the anti-war movement in the United States during World War II, gave a virulently anti-Semitic speech in 1941. The anti-Semitic demagogue Gerald Winrod broadcast fiery speeches denouncing communists and warning, “ War never pays.” Homegrown fascists also used the language of pacifism. Ernest Lundeen to insert into the Congressional Record in 1937-1939. The German agent George Sylvester Viereck actually wrote speeches for anti-war Minnesota Sen. Pacifist religious denominations like Jehovah’s Witnesses were often sent to concentration camps.īut while they attacked domestic pacifism, Nazi propagandists encouraged it abroad, especially in the United States. The Nazis burned copies of Erich Maria Remarque’s anti-war novel All Quiet on the Western Front and made owning it a crime. Anti-war activists and thinkers need to be consciously anti-fascist if they want to avoid being co-opted to the cause of violence, hatred, and war by both bad actors close to hand and authoritarian regimes abroad.Īdolf Hitler and his Nazi regime famously glorified militarism and hated pacifists-at home. But his original article, and the debate about it, has served to obscure the fact that unprincipled people, and leaders, sometimes do use pacifist and anti-war rhetoric as a shield. Orwell was right to reconsider: Principled pacifists aren’t fascists. Meanwhile, anti-war partisans have pointed out that Orwell recanted his use of the phrase and admitted that it was wrong to lump principled pacifists and fascists together. His with-me-or-against-me formulation has been wheeled out to argue for intervention ever since. “Pacifism is objectively pro-Fascist,” George Orwell famously wrote in his 1942 essay “ Pacifism and the War.” Orwell’s argument was straightforward anyone not helping the war effort against fascism was hindering it and therefore helping the Nazis. |
